Fergie: It was a mistake

Sir Alex Ferguson rues his missed opportunity to bring goalkeeper Edwin Van der Sar to Old Trafford back in 1999.

Van der Sar has been an ever-present in a United defence looking to record an unprecedented 12th successive Premier League clean sheet when they tackle Everton at Old Trafford.

It seems hard to imagine now but three-and-a-half years ago, before Van der Sar moved north from Fulham in a bargain £2million deal, United's goalkeeping was seen as their weak link.

After Peter Schmeichel left the club almost a dozen goalkeepers had been tried, from French World Cup winner Fabien Barthez to Italian Massimo Taibi, and none of them had proved successful.

In the end Ferguson returned to the man he first identified at Schmeichel's replacement.

"I do reflect on 1999 even more now, there is no doubt about that." said the United chief.

"It was a mistake.

"I did want Edwin but by that time (chief executive) Martin Edwards had done a deal with Mark Bosnich. It was too late to get out of it and Edwin went to Juventus instead.

"But all through 2005 we were assessing where we should be going with the goalkeeping positions.

"We got information on all the goalkeepers who were a possibility and Van der Sar's name came up all the time so we didn't hesitate."

Having lost out once, Ferguson's perseverance has been rewarded with a series of outstanding performances that have allowed United to regain the dominance they enjoyed when Van der Sar came to their attention.

And because the former Ajax goalkeeper has kept himself in peak condition, United are benefiting to a far greater extent than many people imagined.

"Edwin has brought an incredible knowledge and patience to the back four," added Ferguson.

"His use of the ball is fantastic and he has all the technical parts of the goalkeeping position, plus his experience as well, you have a fantastic performer.

"When you look at this run of clean sheets, Edwin has been the key figure.

"He might be in the twilight of his career but he is in the form of his life."

So good in fact, Van der Sar has already signed a one-year contract extension that will take him to the summer of 2010.

The player himself has hinted he will be ready to call time on his stellar career by that point; Ferguson is not so sure.

"At his age I am sure he could go on," said the United boss.

"We are playing it that way, so he has got another season just now and we will see what happens after that."

Inter deny match-fixing claims

Inter Milan have strenuously denied allegations of match-fixing involving games towards the end of last season.

The club today responded to an article in the Il Giornale newspaper, which claimed to have acquired a report from the justice department to the Public Prosecutor's office questioning Inter's poor form towards the end of last season.

A statement on the Inter website read: "With regard to the impudent and misleading title that appeared on the front page of today's Il Giornale newspaper, reporting a declaration that was never made, FC Internazionale Milano confirms that, as stated by the Public Prosecutor's office in Milan, there is no investigation into the 2007/08 championship or Inter.

"The club will take any necessary legal proceedings to protect its image."

The Public Prosecutor's Office also denied the allegations, releasing a brief statement which read: "The office would like to confirm that no inquiry was ever made regarding the 2007/08 season and, in particular, Inter."

Inter were runaway leaders in Serie A at one point last season, 1o points clear of the chasing pack, but a loss of form towards the end of the campaign saw them go into the final game only one point ahead of Roma.

The Nerazzurri clung on to take the title by three points.

Inter president Massimo Moratti slammed the allegations against his club.

"It's a joke," he said. "It's already been denied by the Public Prosecutor's office and so there's no need for my denial."

Predict The Aussie Open Winner

Sunday’s Australian Open final pits Roger Federer against Rafael Nadal. Who will win? We’d like your view.

Federer is aiming for the fourteenth Grand Slam of his career to equal Pete Sampras' haul, and a fourth Australian Open; whilst Nadal is trying to justify his world number one ranking with his first Grand Slam win Down Under.

To add a little spice, you can vote on Predict the Winner HERE, and stand to win great prizes from Thai Airways! Maybe this will help you.

Roger Federer:
The Swiss Master is a highly versatile player who performs well on all surfaces. Federer volleys with ease and is an excellent baseliner, fundamentally sound to the point that he can play precise groundstrokes from both wings.

Rafael Nadal:
Meanwhile, Rafa is armed with a well-angled topspin heavy stroke, a strong two-handed backhand, lateral speed and agility, and a preference to play from deep. The Spaniard relies on his south paw, athletic ability and tenacity to bully his opponents into submission.

espnstar.com says: NADAL
Nadal is a headache for Federer as his left-handed forehands direct almost all traffic to the Swiss Master's single-hand backhand. Although Federer has a fundamentally sound backhand slice, it is inadequate to deal with the Gladiator's berserker barrage. Look for Nadal to wear down Federer into an unforced error and try to capitalize on the Swiss' mistakes.

Federer will try up the tempo on the faster Rod Laver Arena surface and execute a volley-oriented strategy for the win.

The Spaniard currently holds a 12-6 advantage over Federer, and a perfect four out of four in their matchups in 2008.

Proteas gun for top rank at the WACA

South Africa might have won the ODI series against Australia but the number one team spot will still be up for grabs at the WACA.

When the Proteas entered the ODI series without their charismatic skipper Graeme Smith, not one critic gave them a chance against a brilliant Aussie batting-line up. But with what they have done now, tomorrow's game becomes crucial because that will decide which team would take top honours in the ICC cricket rankings.

The South African side though would miss the services of their of top pacers Makhaya Ntini and Dale Steyn who have been rested after a epic tour, while back from injury Nathan Bracken and Micheal Clarke would further brace the Australian side. The replacement in the Australian side to accomodate these two should be Cameron White and Shaun Tait.

Van Jaarsveld handed SA chance

For the South Africans, the rest to the senior pacers would mean that the two left-arm fast men Wayne Parnell and Lonwabo Tsotsobe will be making their ODI debuts after appearing in one of the Twenty20 internationals. Jacques Kallis might also be rested but that would depend upon Van Jaarsveld's fitness.

The Aussies have been given rollicking starts by David Warner and Shaun Marsh and the Kangaroos would be hoping of another good show from the openers. Marsh has been the top scorer of the series from either side picking up 213 runs.

For the Proteas, this would be a new look side but still the way Johan Botha has led the side, writing this team off would be at your own perils.

The track at WACA should be another belter with good and predictable bounce, thereby promising oodles of runs to both sides.

Pace duo to make debut for SA

This match is very important considering the return Test and ODI series begins in a month and hence so team would look to give the final advantage to the other.would be very important and neither side would want to give the other one

Teams

Australia: Ricky Ponting, Michael Clarke, Nathan Bracken, Brad Haddin, Ben Hilfenhaus, James Hopes, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Shaun Tait, David Warner, Cameron White.

South Africa: Johan Botha, Hashim Amla, Mark Boucher, AB DeVilliers, Jean-Paul Duminy, Herschelle Gibbs, Jacques Kallis, Neil McKenzie, Albie Morkel, Morne MOrkel, Makhaya Ntini, Wayne Parnell, Dale Steyn, Lonwabo Tsotsobe, Vaughan Van Jaarsveld, Graeme Smith.

Record broken in Kenya defeat

Zimbabwe hit their highest-ever one-day international total on the way to a 151-run win over Kenya.

With their victory, Zimbabwe have a 2-0 lead in their five-match series against Kenya.

Led by a career-best 90 from Stuart Matsikenyeri the tourists reached 351 for seven at the Mombassa Sports Club, which surpassed their previous best 340 for two against Namibia at the 2003 World Cup.

Matsikenyeri fell just short of his first ODI century when he was trapped lbw by Collins Obuya in the 42nd over to end a 95-ball innings that included eight fours and a six.

Matsikenyeri's dismissal brought Elton Chigumbura to the crease, and after he hit a quickfire 79 in the opening match, the all-rounder again dominated the home attack, clubbing 68 from just 29 balls to ensure Zimbabwe passed 300 for the second game running.

Kenya were never in the hunt after Zimbabwe's impressive batting display and were bowled out for 200 in 45.1 overs.

Kenya captain Steve Tikolo (56) top scored for the hosts, the 37-year-old veteran registering the 22nd ODI fifty of his long career.

Spinner Keith Dabengwa was the pick of the Zimbabwean bowlers taking two for 21 from 5.1 overs.

Zimbabwe will be aiming to wrap up the series on Saturday when the action moves to Nairobi for the final three games.

Teams

Zimbabwe: H Masakadza, V Sibanda, S Matsikenyari, T Mupariwa, E Chigumbura, F Mutizwa, KM Damengwa, RW Price, P Utseya, AG Cremer, MN Waller.

Kenya: MA Ouma, S Waters, A Obanda, SO Tikolo, CO Obuya, JK Kamande, TM Odoyo, HA Varaiya, N Odhiambo, KO Otieno, PJ Ongondo.

Wenger: Tim is very intelligent

Arsenal's Arsene Wenger feels that Tim Cahill is no longer a 'makeshift striker' after his recent displays for Everton.

The Australian scored his 100th career goal, installed himself as Everton's top scorer this term in the 1-1 draw with Arsenal and won the praise of Emirates boss Wenger.

And Wenger also maintains that Everton are as big a threat to them in the battle for fourth spot as Aston Villa.

Wenger was full of praise for Everton. More than once he has left Goodison Park in the past moaning about his side being mugged and roughed up. Not this time.

Everton matched Arsenal's respected footballing qualities and deserved to win. A goal in the third minute of injury-time from Robin van Persie rescued the Gunners.

Since midfielder Cahill was switched up front in December at Manchester City when Everton had no fit strikers, he has been a revelation. Four goals in that nine-match spell underline that.

Cahill is now a fully paid up member of the strikers' union and is likely to stay there for the rest of the season with boss David Moyes failing in two attempts at loan signings - one being Alan Smith from Newcastle.

And Wenger said: "I have seen something that has underlined what I have always felt. Everton are as big a threat to us as Aston Villa.

"Everton are a very good side, and they are our rivals for a top four place just as much as Villa.

"They play with a fantastic spirit, and in Tim Cahill they have a player who is very intelligent, he always knows where to be.

"That is something that is hard to teach, but he always seems to be in the right place."

Moyes admits the chances of signing a loan striker are slim, explaining: "Unless something comes out of the blue, we won't be signing anyone.

"We have made enquires for two loan signings, and neither of them are going to happen.

"Both deals are dead and we expect to continue the season now with the squad we have got."

That means Cahill at the sharp end, with the 29-year-old even scaring his own mates.

Full-back Leighton Baines, who produced the cross for another Cahill headed goal said: "He is a menace, he's difficult to play against you and he's a rash all over you.

"Tim's a real nightmare. I have watched him of late and I would not want to be playing against him. He pops up with important goals and is a genius in the box.

"He's always in the right position and doesn't give defenders a minute's peace. He's as physical with defenders as they are with him, you just want him to go away."

Moyes said: "Tim is scoring like a striker, taking the knocks and working for the team.

"His goal was excellent. It was a great header, a fine cross and he is doing really well for us.

"He has overcome his injuries, and is getting to a very high level. Goalscoring is crucial, and he can do that from midfield and up front. That is what makes him a special talent.

"Tim was marvellous. He came off at the end with an injury, but it does not look too bad. A kick on the foot and he should be okay.

"But it's not just him. Joleon Lescott and Phil Jagielka were out of this world at the back. The standards they have set are so high, and it has to be.

"The standard of players we are facing just now it is tough. They did well twice against Fernando Torres, and this time faced two very good front men in Van Persie and (Emmanuel) Adebayor.

"One lapse at the end cost us. Now we have Manchester United next and then Liverpool again, so it won't get any easier for them."

The Scot added: "To be disappointed with only a draw against a team like Arsenal shows where we have come from and where we are at the moment.

"We are doing so well - but those two points dropped have hurt us. Had we won we would have been really close to Arsenal and nearer to Aston Villa.

"But we have dropped points to late goals now at Goodison Park to both those sides in recent weeks, and it has cost us.

Wenger added: "It was very important not to lose.

"We needed to keep Everton at a distance from us, and three points would have put them very close to us."

Kinnear fires back at N'Zogbia

Newcastle manager Joe Kinnear has accused Charles N'Zogbia of trying to engineer his way out of the club.

The 22-year-old Frenchman tonight issued a statement, claiming the Magpies manager had insulted him by mis-pronouncing his name several times during an interview.

N'Zogbia, left out of the 18 for last night's 2-1 Barclays Premier League defeat at Manchester City, insists he will never play for Kinnear again as a result.

However, Kinnear hit back - and revealed that Newcastle have not had a single offer for him.

He said: "I couldn't believe it when I was told Charles had issued a statement claiming he was insulted, apparently for nothing more than me mis-pronouncing his name in a post-match interview at Manchester City.

"Okay, I got a little tongue-tied - but if I had a pound for every time I've mis-pronounced a player's name down the years, then I'd be a very wealthy man indeed.

"There have already been plenty of quotes attributed to Charles during January, saying he is interested in leaving for other clubs. But the truth is we haven't received a formal offer for him.

"Sadly, this just smacks of a desperate attempt to engineer a move away from Newcastle United - a club that gave Charles the chance to play in the Premier League and which has rewarded him handsomely during his time at St James' Park."

In his statement, issued to Sky Sports News, N'Zogbia said: "First of all, I wish to apologise to the fans for wanting to leave the club.

"However, having been insulted by Joe Kinnear, I will never play for him again while he remains Newcastle manager."

The former Le Havre player and his representatives have been actively trying to secure his exit from St James' Park for some time, and have stepped up their efforts during the current transfer window - which closes at 5pm next Monday.

Tottenham, Arsenal, Aston Villa, Wigan and Lyon are among the clubs which have been credited with an interest in him in recent weeks.

N'Zogbia claimed: "The club are aware there are offers on the table, and they should accept one of them."

Moratti expects Super Mario to stay

Massimo Moratti expects youngster Mario Balotelli to remain at the club despite falling out with boss Jose Mourinho.

The 18-year-old is one of Inter's most promising players, but has earned the ire of his Portuguese boss in recent weeks culminating in his omission for "disciplinary reasons" from the squad that beat Catania 2-0 last night.

Reports today have suggested Balotelli even rejected a late request to travel to Sicily after Inter received confirmation that their appeal against Adriano's three-match ban had failed.

That has only served to fuel speculation Balotelli is set for a move away from the San Siro, just a day after assistant coach Giuseppe Baresi dismissed talk West Ham had inquired about his services.

And while Moratti admitted the player had toyed with the idea of a move he expects him to remain in Milan.

"I haven't spoken to the coach today, but there are no new developments," Moratti told the club's website www.inter.it.

"The player had the idea of leaving. He changed his mind and then changed his mind again, but we have put a lot of faith in him because he is a quality player."

Moratti also expects Balotelli and Mourinho to patch up their difference and denied talk the Italy Under-21 international would be left out of Inter's Champions League squad for the knockout stages.

"I really don't think he will be left out of the Champions League squad. Mourinho has common sense and knows what to do," he added.

Report: Newcastle launch Nolan bid

Joe Kinnear's Newcastle United have submitted an offer to Bolton Wanderers for their captain Kevin Nolan.

Magpies boss Joe Kinnear is eager to bring new faces to St James' Park before the transfer window closes on Monday.

He has lost midfielder Joey Barton for the next eight weeks after the former Manchester City player fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot in last night's defeat against his old club.

Nolan would fit the bill as a replacement for Barton, however it is not known whether Bolton are prepared to sell.

The 26-year-old Trotters skipper has made over 300 appearances for Bolton since emerging in the first team as a teenager, and in previous seasons has been tipped as a potential England international.

Fedex one win away from record

Swiss ace Roger Federer is just one win away from equalling Pete Sampras' record of 14 Grand Slam singles titles.

Roddick put up a good fight, producing some of his best tennis, but Federer was a class apart and secured a 6-2 7-5 7-5 win.

He will now face either Rafael Nadal or Fernando Verdasco in Sunday's final in Melbourne when he will be looking to regain the title he surrendered last year to Novak Djokovic when he was suffering from glandular fever.

"I kind of came up short against Novak. I thought he played a fantastic match against me," Federer said after his latest win.

"I do feel better mentally (this year). I'm obviously more healthy so I can focus on playing well. I'm really pleased about my performance so far in the tournament. The draw was difficult and dangerous if you look back on who I had to play."

On Thursday, Federer held serve throughout the encounter and seemed able to raise his level at just the right time to slap down Roddick's challenge.

Roddick came into the clash having lost to Federer in 15 of their 17 previous meetings so knew he had to produce something special to reach his first Australian Open final.

He had won their last encounter - in Miami last year - but things did not start well for the seventh seed on this occasion.

Federer made his customary fast start, breaking Roddick's serve in the third game. The American was soon a double break down and vented his frustration during an argument with the umpire.

Roddick seemed determined to attack the net whenever possible, but his volleying did not appear to be up to scratch, while Federer often came up with a pass.

The Swiss maestro was soon a set to the good, but Roddick was keen not to go down without a fight and his level improved in the second set.

Undoubtedly fitter under new coach Larry Stefanki, his serve began to cause Federer more problems and he dug in to keep the set on serve.

However, when the set reached its business end, Federer pounced.

Roddick was broken to love in the 11th game and Federer easily served out for a two-set lead.

As the American sat down he must have wondered what he had to do. The statistics showed he had got 70 per cent of his first serves in, yet he was still two sets down and being out-aced by the second seed.

As the third set progressed on serve, the quality rose again and the crowd on the Rod Laver Arena - roof open - clearly wanted another set.

However, the pattern of the second set was repeated - Federer striking at just the right time.

Roddick saved three break points at 5-5 but not a fourth and moments later Federer was celebrating victory thanks to a sumptuous forehand winner down the line.

Reflecting on his win, Federer said: "I had a great start. That helped a lot. I mean, I thought that I played really solid out there tonight. I thought level was high throughout the match.

"I had a couple good games where I served really well in the first set, and that gave me a lot of confidence going into the second one. I was moving well and getting a lot of balls back and making it difficult for Andy to get the upper hand from the baseline. That was kind of what I was hoping for."

Roddick insisted he would take "a lot of positives" out of his run to the semis, but knew he had been beaten by the better man.

He said: "I hit the ball pretty well. If you look at his stats for the match, both of us had pretty good stats. You know, he just came up with shots when he needed to. That's what he does."

Portsmouth 0-1 Aston Villa

Emile Heskey paid off the first instalment of his £3.5million transfer fee with a 20th-minute debut goal for Aston Villa.

Villa are now third in the Premier League with their latest smash-and-grab success at Fratton Park.

Luckless Portsmouth, meanwhile, slipped deeper into the relegation mire just four days after losing their grip on the FA Cup, losing Nadir Belhadj to a red card in the process.

Martin O'Neill's side are now level on points with second-placed Liverpool, who were at one stage linked with a transfer window move for their former striker Heskey.

On this evidence, he already looks an astute purchase for Villa.

Villa, though, were left clinging on against Pompey's 10 men who should have snatched a equaliser right at the end when substitute John Utaka ran straight into goalkeeper Brad Friedel instead of shooting from close range.

Earlier Pompey boss Tony Adams - who has won just two of 14 games since taking over from Harry Redknapp - saw his own new signing Hayden Mullins waste two plausible chances.

He was further sickened when Algerian Nadir Belhadj saw red - first for tripping Craig Gardner and then handling the ball after an innocuous clash with Carlos Cuellar.

Pompey still battled to the end with substitute Utaka missing another clear opportunity right at the death. But by then most of the 19,073 crowd must have know it was again going to be Villa's night.

The visitors had barely threatened before keeper Brad Friedel's monster clearance was headed on unchallenged by Agbonlahor, who found Heskey's fine run.

The England striker was afforded too much space to meet his partner's ball on the edge of the area and drilled it first time past David James.

Australian Open Day Ten Updates

India pair Sania Mirza and Mahesh Bhupathi are through to the fourth round of the mixed doubles at the Australian Open.

The duo beat Canadian pair Aleksandra Wozniak and Daniel Nestor, 3-6 6-4 [10-5].

In the women's singles quarterfinals, Olympic champion Elena Dementieva of Russia defeated Spain's Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2 6-2.

Suarez Navarro, who knocked out Venus Williams, seemed to be affected by the heat and succumbed easily to the fourth seed.

Robinho 'arrested for sexual assault'

Manchester City forward Robinho was arrested over allegations of a serious sexual assault in a nightclub, it was reported.

Manchester City forward Robinho was arrested over allegations of a serious sexual assault in a nightclub, it was reported today.

The Brazil international's spokesman confirmed the player met police yesterday as part of a "criminal investigation", but did not mention the nature of the inquiry.

West Yorkshire Police said a man was arrested and questioned yesterday in connection with a serious sexual assault in a Leeds nightclub on January 14.

A spokesman for the force refused to confirm the identity of the man but said he was released on bail.

Robinho's spokesman Chris Nathaniel said the player denied any wrongdoing and was happy to cooperate with police.

In a statement on the star's official website, Nathaniel said: "We can confirm that Robinho met the police today (Tuesday), as pre-arranged and as part of a criminal investigation.

"He strenuously denies any allegation of wrongdoing or criminality and is happy to cooperate with the police if required further."

Robinho, whose full name is Robson de Souza, joined City from Real Madrid in September for £32.5 million, making him the most expensive British transfer.

"Chance for young spinners to shine"

India captain MS Dhoni admitted that the experience of Harbhajan Singh would be sorely missed against Sri Lanka.

But he added that it will provide an opportunity to young spinners to prove their mettle in spin-friendly tracks in the island during the five-match ODI series.

"Harbhajan has been our pick of the spinners for some time. Whether you are bowling first or second or bowling in powerplays, he is the person. We will miss him as pitches here give assistance to spinners," Dhoni said at a joint press conference with home team skipper Mahela Jayawardene on Monday after reaching the island nation.

"Harbhajan is recovering from injury. So we have two spinners in the side, Pragyan Ojha and Ravindra Jadeja. I think they will try to fill in the space left by Harbhajan's absence. Of course we have part-timers also who have done well. It is an opportunity for both the spinners to prove themselves," Dhoni added.

We have to start from the scratch, says Dhoni

India have been in great form in one-dayers recently having beaten England 5-0 but Dhoni said that would not count much and they would have to start from scratch against the Lankans.

"Frankly speaking, you know most of the international sides now. You know each and every player of their team. We have played against them (Lankans) quite frequently. But it is not how often you have played against a team or a player. You have to start from the scratch.

"It will be a tough series. It is tough to beat Sri Lanka in Sri Lanka though we had defeated them the last time around."

Dhoni felt winning the toss would play a crucial role in the outcome of the games.

"The good thing is that our players must have learnt a lot from the last series. And one thing which went wrong was the toss aspect. A lot depends on the toss over here. In the day-night games and even at Dambulla toss is a crucial factor.

We'll try to continue the winning momentum: Mahela

Home team captain Jayawardene said his side would look to carry on the winning momentum after their 2-1 series victory over Pakistan.

"Our strategy will be to try and continue the winning momentum. It is going to be a tough series and we look forward to the challenge," he said.

He praised his team-mates for the way they bounced back from 0-1 down in the series against Pakistan.

"We lost the first game against Pakistan. It was really tough for us to come back. We had a chat and we knew exactly what went wrong. Next two games was history.

"I mean the way our boys played was brilliant. They took the challenge and showed a lot of character. That is what the international game of cricket is all about. You do have your ups and downs. But we need to identify the areas we need to improve upon."

Amla, De Villiers guide SA to series win

Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers helped South Africa claim eight-wicket victory and an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series.

South Africa opener Herschelle Gibbs also produced a scintillating cameo of 38 as the tourists made light work of their run chase against Australia in the fourth one-dayer on Monday to seal the series 3-1, with another match still to go.

Gibbs plays an excellent knock

Gibbs faced just 29 balls, smashing eight boundaries, and was the key player in a 58-run opening stand with Amla. He eventually miscued one of several lofted drives and was caught by Mike Hussey at mid-on.

Gibbs' replacement, Jacques Kallis, also made batting look easy but he was dismissed by James Hopes with Shaun Marsh taking the catch at short mid-wicket.

That left the Proteas on 79 for two, but Amla and De Villiers forged what proved to be the winning partnership by picking up plenty of singles and twos.

They then played with more flair with a mid-innings powerplay sparking a more aggressive approach. The duo rarely strayed from the orthodox as time was on their side and the ever-decreasing run-rate ensured life out in the middle remained low key.

Amla, De Villiers put Proteas in control

Amla was the first to bring up his fifty in 70 balls, including four fours, while De Villiers passed the mark with a six over mid-wicket.

The pair continued to punish Australia's attack and De Villiers, who won the man-of-the-match award, brought up the winning run with a leg-glance.

Hopes was the best of the Aussie bowlers with one for 28 off 7.1 overs while Ben Hilfenhaus was the other wicket taker.

Earlier, Australia won the toss but were bowled out in 48 overs.

Aussies all out for 222

The hosts looked to be in a strong position at 110 for two with top scorer Ponting and Mike Hussey (24) keeping the run-rate ticking over at around a run per ball.

But the pair were dismissed in quick succession and when Brad Haddin followed soon after the home side were struggling on 130 for five at the 25-over mark.

It was then left to the tail to scramble as many runs as they could in the second half of the innings.

Hopes posted a responsible and well-timed 42 off 44 deliveries while Cameron White made a fighting 30 but got out chasing a wide Dale Steyn delivery.

Steyn had the best figures with three for 49 while Makhaya Ntini took some early punishment from Ponting but fought back to finish with three for 52.

SA make early breakthrough

The Proteas made an early breakthrough by dismissing opener David Warner, caught by Morne Morkel off Ntini at mid-on in the second over.

Marsh (13) then followed to an outstanding Morkel catch at fine-leg off Steyn but Ponting launched a counter-attack, hitting Ntini for three fours in the eighth over and adding two more boundaries at the start of Albie Morkel's spell.

Mike Hussey played a support role but was eventually trapped lbw by Johan Botha. Two soft dismissals followed, Ponting caught by Neil McKenzie at cover and Haddin held in the deep by Kallis.

White and Hopes added some respectability with a 37-run stand - but the former was dismissed just as the recovery was taking shape.

As wickets ran out, Australia called for the powerplay in the 43rd over and worked hard for 30 runs out of it. But they were bowled out in 48 overs when Hilfenhaus was caught behind.

The final one-dayer will take place in Perth on Friday.

Teams:

Australia: Shaun Marsh, David Warner, Ricky Ponting (capt), Michael Hussey, David Hussey, Cameron White, Brad Haddin (wk), James Hopes, Mitchell Johnson, Ben Hilfenhaus, Shaun Tait.

South Africa:
Herschelle Gibbs, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wk), JP Duminy, Neil McKenzie, Albie Morkel, Morne Morkel, Johan Botha (capt), Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini.

Hat-trick in United's sights

Manchester United may be struggling badly with injuries, but Ryan Giggs remains positive the team will do well.

The Welshman also stated they have no intention of giving up their position at the top of the Barclays Premier League.

Amazingly, having returned from the Club World Cup in Japan seven points adrift of Liverpool, United are now ahead of their north-west rivals on goal difference - with a game in hand.

It is a situation even Sir Alex Ferguson did not expect - and with the Old Trafford fixture against Everton brought forward 48 hours to Saturday teatime, a day before Rafael Benitez's men tackle Chelsea, few will be shocked if United are not headed for the rest of the campaign as they look to complete a title hat-trick.

As a veteran of all 10 previous Premier League championships, Giggs is aware life is seldom so straightforward. But the former Wales captain is adamant the Red Devils will be clinging on to top spot with all their might.

"Once you hit the front, you want to stay there," he said.

"We always try to be somewhere near at Christmas. If there are one or two points between the top two or three it is whoever goes into the last few weeks in form.

"But we know what the run-in is like, and there is no doubt we want the others chasing us rather than the other way round."

For Giggs, finishing top again would have special significance - because it would give him an 11th title, matching the number on his shirt that has been worn with such distinction for almost two decades.

Confirmation that Sir Alex Ferguson will offer him another year at the highest level was no shock - and while most pundits expect next season to be Giggs' last, the 35-year-old may still have an impact in 2011.

"I don't really think of it in these terms. But yes, it would definitely be nice to get 11," he agrees.

Although he has been used almost exclusively as an impact substitute during major games over the last 18 months, including the Champions League final, Giggs was told by Ferguson two weeks in advance of the meeting with Chelsea earlier this month that he would play a major role.

Given such advance warning, Giggs was able to prepare himself for a performance Michael Ballack could not cope with as Chelsea were put firmly in their place.

"I was really up for it," said Giggs.

"I had not started the previous games against the big four, so I was delighted to be told I was playing.

"You become a footballer to play in these big games. That is why it is great playing for United - because Chelsea was just one of many."

A visit to West Brom tomorrow does not rank quite so high. But it has turned out to be an important trip as United look to take the next step towards an unprecedented quadruple, or quintet - if the world championship triumph in Japan is taken into account.

Given they will be without a dozen senior men, including five defenders, it promises to be a stern test of United's resolve.

Darren Fletcher is expected to start at right-back, with Giggs handed one of the midfield berths as Ferguson looks to inject an element of freshness into his team following the weekend FA Cup win over Tottenham.

There was a time when West Brom could have expected to win this fixture as a matter of course, going 12 games undefeated against United on home soil - 10 of which were won - from during a 14-year spell from 1968.

All that has changed, though, with United victorious on their last five visits - and West Brom were swamped by four second-half goals at Old Trafford earlier this season.

That is not to say Giggs is taking anything for granted against Tony Mowbray's men.

"It is going to be tough," he predicted.

"I admire West Brom for the way they play. They outplayed us at times at Old Trafford earlier this season.

"Their passing and movement was excellent, and they are on a good run at the moment - especially at home - so we are under no illusions."

Spurs seal double swoop

Tottenham have signed Carlo Cudicini from Chelsea and Pascal Chimbonda from Sunderland, Harry Redknapp has confirmed.

Chimbonda left White Hart Lane in the summer but failed to settle in the north-east and will now provide Spurs boss Redknapp with cover across his defence.

The 29-year-old Frenchman will not, however, be available for the home Barclays Premier League clash against Stoke on Tuesday evening.

"I've signed him and he's coming here," Redknapp said.

"The deal should have been done in the morning but it's over-run the deadline for him to play against Stoke. It was done 15 minutes too late which was disappointing. Otherwise he would have been available."

Cudicini, the 35-year-old goalkeeper, has been drafted in to compete with current number one Heurelho Gomes, who has been carrying a thigh strain.

The Italian had been at Chelsea since 1999 and was first-choice goalkeeper at the club until the arrival of Petr Cech in 2004.

Cudicini originally signed for Chelsea on a year-long loan from Castel di Sangro in the summer of 1999 and made his move permanent the following summer for £160,000.

He was named the Blues' player of the year in 2002 and has helped the club win two Premier League titles, two FA Cups and two League Cups.

Cesar Sanchez's departure to Valencia last week left Redknapp with only youngster Ben Alnwick as cover for Gomes.

Gerrard is a problem for United

Steven Gerrard's FA Cup derby leveller for Liverpool may have unwittingly handed Manchester United a problem.

United are without 12 senior players for tomorrow's Barclays Premier League trip to West Brom, leaving Sir Alex Ferguson to pick through his squad for a team of fit players.

Ferguson was hoping the situation might have eased in time United's next league game against Everton - with both Rio Ferdinand and Wes Brown tipped to be available after long-standing back and ankle problems respectively and Park Ji-sung on the brink of a comeback from a minor hamstring complaint.

But the Old Trafford encounter with David Moyes' men will now be played 48 hours ahead of schedule - moving forward to Saturday January 31 from Monday February 2 to clear the way for Everton's FA Cup replay with Liverpool on February 4.

It robs Ferdinand, Brown and Park, or anyone else among United's walking wounded who might have had a chance of returning against the Toffees, of two extra days' preparation.

The late change is part of a confusing February fixture list for United.

Their remaining outstanding game against Fulham - originally postponed in August because of the Red Devils' presence in the European Super Cup - has been pencilled in for February 17. But that will be dependent on neither side requiring a fifth-round replay.

In addition, the Red Devils' home match against Portsmouth on February 28 has been postponed because of their appearance in the Carling Cup Final the following day.

Murray still on track for success

Andy Murray's momentum for the title is building nicely as he heads into the second week of the Australian Open.

The 21-year-old Scot overcame illness to thrash Jurgen Melzer 7-5 6-0 6-3 in Melbourne on Saturday and now faces another left-hander in Spain's Fernando Verdasco, who had a similarly comprehensive 6-4 6-0 6-0 win over a lacklustre Radek Stepanek.

The world number four, chasing a maiden grand slam title, has not dropped a set so far after an aborted first round against Andrei Pavel - when the Romanian retired with a back problem - and a comfortable 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory against Marcel Granollers.

After that win, Murray spent Friday in bed with a headache and sore throat but you would never have known, such was his utter dominance over Melzer on Saturday.

The British number one's triumph over the Austrian stretched his winning run against left-handers to 21 matches.

The only left-handed player he has lost to is Rafael Nadal - the current world number one, top seed in Melbourne, and the man he is on a collision course to meet in the semi-finals.

As for Verdasco, who is ranked 15 in the world, Murray has beaten him five times - the first win coming in the second round at the Australian Open in 2007 and the last at the ATP Master Series tournament in Paris last year.

"Against Verdasco, it's very important to use my head. I have a very good record against left-handers. The only one I've lost to on the tour has been Nadal," Murray said.

"I need to use my head, make him (Verdasco) do a lot of thinking and moving. If I play like I did (against Melzer), I can definitely win that one."

Verdasco has been in scintillating form, dropping just 12 games in his three matches to date.

His confidence has been sky-high since playing a leading role in helping Spain - minus Nadal who was unavailable because of tendonitis in his right knee - win the Davis Cup against Argentina last November.

He partnered Feliciano Lopez to victory in the doubles and then overturned a two-sets-to-one deficit against Jose Acasuso to triumph and clinch the trophy.

He spent time in the off-season with Andre Agassi's former fitness guru Gil Reyes in Las Vegas and has hit the ground running, reaching the final in the warm-up event in Brisbane, where he lost to Stepanek, and rattling up the wins against Adrian Mannarino, Arnaud Clement and Stepanek in Melbourne.

He believes the closest he has come to feeling as good as he does at the moment was during last year's Wimbledon where he defeated Philipp Kohlschreiber, Olivier Rochus and Tomas Berdych before bowing out to Mario Ancic in an epic five-setter in the fourth round.

"Right now I think I'm feeling physically and mentally stronger than last year in Wimbledon," the 14th seed said.

"This pre-season for me, it was a really, really big change. I think I improved a lot in the two weeks I was with Gil Reyes in Las Vegas. I think after these two weeks I realised much more how I can play and how I can be a harder player for the other players to play."

Beating Murray in his current form however, is going to take something special from the Spaniard.

"He's a very good player, so complete in all the aspects in the game. He serves good. He has an unbelievable backhand. I think physically he's one of the best right now also. He has good hands also for the slice, to defend. So he's pretty complete in all the aspects of the game," said the 25-year-old.

"But, you know, I think I need to play my game anyway and try to beat him like this. I won't change my game because he's one player, you know, one kind of player. I'm feeling pretty good."

Chimbonda set for Spurs return

Sunderland defender Pascal Chimbonda could be on his way back to Tottenham after just six months on Wearside.

It is understood that the 29-year-old Frenchman is due to have medical and holds talks with his former club on Monday after the Black Cats agreed to let him go.

Chimbonda had made just 16 appearances for the north-east club since his summer move from White Hart Lane, but has started the last four games.

After a promising first few weeks at the Stadium of Light, he lost his place in the side under former boss Roy Keane amid rumours of disciplinary problems.

Chimbonda arrived on Wearside in July as part of the deal which also brought Teemu Tainio and Steed Malbranque to the club.

The fee for the three players remains undisclosed, but it is understood Sunderland will recoup their investment in the former Wigan full-back if the move goes through.

Sunday's development came as something of a surprise a day after Spurs boss Harry Redknapp confirmed the club had made an offer for striker Kenwyne Jones.

Black Cats manager Ricky Sbragia has previously insisted none of his better players will be allowed to leave this month, although it remains to be seen whether or not that stance has changed amid suggestions that the Londoners have offered £6million plus Darren Bent in return.

In the meantime, Sbragia's efforts to strengthen his defensive resources are ongoing, and the news that he is prepared to let Chimbonda leave suggests he is confident of making progress.

The Scot has made the capture of at least one experienced defender a priority during the transfer window and, despite being linked with the likes of James Collins, Callum Davenport and Christophe Berra, insists the identities of his targets have yet to emerge publicly.

Robinho: I did not run away

Manchester City striker Robinho has rubbished claims that he ran away from the Tenerife training camp.

And the Brazilian believes it would be unfair if he was fined. Robinho reportedly left the week long training camp to sort out personal matters in Brazil.

But manager Mark Hughes has said that the 24-year-old did not have his consent to go, something which Robinho strongly refutes.

The former Real Madrid star is due back in Manchester on Sunday and is expected to start against Newcastle regardless of the situation.

"I said goodbye to everyone before I went to the airport, they saw me with my suitcase," Robinho told The People.

"I did not run away and I did not hide. The club knew. How can I be fined? I don't think that would be fair.

"I did not go back to Brazil to party but to sort out a personal problem and I would never have left if we'd had a game.

"I don't understand the controversy that this story has caused. I had to resolve an urgent personal issue, that's all there is to it.

"If we had a game this weekend this problem would have been resolved by another form and I would have stayed in Manchester."

The striker was defiant that he wanted to remain at City and re-iterated that he had no issues with Hughes.

"I have a contract at City and I am going to stay here. I want to triumph in England and fight to be top goalscorer," he added.

"I repeat that I have no problems with Hughes, not before and not now. I did not come here just for the money but for the exciting sporting project where I am going to have an important role to play."

The reason behind the Brazilian international's trip back home was reportedly so he could sort out a passport out for his 13-month old son and not because he was in a strop over the Kaka saga.

"That is nonsense. I only found out he (Kaka) hadn't signed when I was halfway to Brazil," Robinho explained.

"I am a friend of his and I tried to convince him to come , but it is difficult to change Kaka's mind once it is made up.

"I don't think he is convinced by the idea of playing in England. Without a doubt he would have been a great signing but Kaka has rejected the offer and there is nothing we can do.

"City can be one of the big clubs in England if things are done properly. If Kaka has not come then it is not the end of the world.

"Before everything I am a professional and I play with the team-mates that I have. We have to keep fighting for City and hope that next season other big stars arrive."

Keane in Kop boycott

Robbie Keane's Liverpool future hangs in the balance after he boycotted the FA Cup fourth-round clash with Everton.

Keane, who joined the Reds in a £20million move from Tottenham in the summer, was told by manager Rafa Benitez that he had been replaced by French youngster David Ngog on the bench.

Benitez's decision clearly incensed Keane, which prompted him not to show up at Anfield for the derby match. Captain Steven Gerrard scored the equaliser for Liverpool as they drew 1-1 with rivals Everton.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Benitez explained his reasons for leaving Keane out.

He told The Sun: "We have a good squad and Keane was not selected.

"I have not seen him so I don't know how he has reacted. But every player wants to be involved so I would expect he is not happy.

"Ngog scored twice for the reserves in their last match, so he was a good option. And we have Ryan Babel and Lucas who can play forward, so we were well covered."

Keane has netted only seven times since his switch from White Hart Lane. The Republic of Ireland international has made 16 Premier League starts this season and has been substituted in all but one match.

Keane though, may be offered another opportunity by Benitez, who appreciates his efforts in training.

Benitez added: "He's working hard and, for me, the most important thing is if the players work hard for the team."

Mourinho: Liverpool can win title

Former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho feels Liverpool possess everything they need to win the Premier League title this season.

Rafael Benitez's Reds sit second in the league, level on points with leaders Manchester United but behind on goal difference having also played one game more.

"It has been interesting watching Liverpool this season," Mourinho wrote in the Sunday Telegraph. "I think they have everything they need to win the title."

While firmly in the title race, Liverpool have been guilty of squandering points at home to less-fancied opposition this season, but Mourinho, now the boss of Inter Milan, believes they can keep their championship challenge on track.

"I still can't understand why they didn't do it in the last four years. Why wouldn't they be able to do it this season? Of course they can," he added.

"The manager is good, the players are good, the crowd is unique, the tradition of the club is big, so why can't they do it? I think they can."

Mourinho warned, however, that the resumption of the Champions League at the end of next month could again be a distraction for the Anfield club.

"Usually it is when the Champions League starts that they lose their focus on the Premier League," he continued. "It was like this in previous years when they did very well in the Champions League but they lost too many points in the championship.

"They have already lost 10 points at home by drawing the kind of matches they used to win. Against Stoke, Fulham, West Ham, Hull and Everton it has been two points lost. So if you can imagine that they had those 10 points now, they would be top of the league."

Messi: Barcelona forever!

Lionel Messi has again insisted he has no intention of ever leaving the Nou Camp amid reported interest from Real Madrid.

Messi is currently enjoying arguably his best season at Barca since breaking into the senior squad, and his brace during last night's 4-1 home win over Numancia took his tally to 23 for the campaign in all competitions.

That form has sparked media talk of a potential big-money swoop for the Argentina international by Barca's arch-rivals Real Madrid, who are to have presidential elections this summer, but Messi is adamant he has no interest of moving on from Barca.

"I'll never leave Barcelona. I would only go if I'm pushed. Barcelona is my home," Messi, who moved to the Catalan giants as a 13-year-old in 2000, told Barcelona TV.

"The club has done a lot for me and my family, and there is no way I can thank them for all that."

Barca president Joan Laporta, meanwhile, believes Madrid's supposed interest in the 21-year-old playmaker has been orchestrated in order to try and upset Pep Guardiola's all-conquering side as they move ever closer to the Primera Liga title.

"It seems there exists a campaign to try and unsettle Barca. They are trying to destabilise us to cover up their own problems." he said.

"Messi has made it clear that he is happy here, he's grown up here and is happy.

"He has excellent talent and he shows that every day."

Cardiff City vs Arsenal Live Matchplay

Team News:

Cardiff are hoping for another FA Cup day to remember via a re-run of the 1927 final which saw the Bluebirds famously defeat Arsenal 1-0.

The Gunners were without the suspended Gael Clichy, so drafted in the inexperienced Kieron Gibbs in defence.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also handed a start to ex-Bluebirds midfielder Aaron Ramsey, as well as opting to begin with the fit-again William Gallas on the bench alongside Emmanuel Adebayor.

The Championship play-off contenders, who lost to Portsmouth in last season's FA Cup final, were without injured winger Peter Whittingham, allowing Chris Burke - the new signing from Rangers - to make his first start.

The two sides last met in the competition in 2006 when Arsenal won 2-1 at Highbury in the stadium's final season.

This could also turn out to be Ninian Park's last FA Cup fixture as City are moving to a new ground next season just over the road.

Arsene Wenger (Arsenal manager)

"We know in a cup tie away from home against a Championship team you need full commitment.

"We are a Premier League team at the top of the league and that is why we want to show when we go to these kinds of places that we can compete and show everyone why we are where we are."

Wenger continued: "We are confident, but what we want is to keep our run going and a good focus on every game.

"Every game we win makes us stronger and that's why we want to win the next one.

"This will, though, be a tricky cup game against a good Championship side, so you want to be on your toes and focused."

Dave Jones (Cardiff City manager)

"We're not playing at Wembley, we're at Ninian Park and we'll play the football match and I hope we do that. I've never known a team to play the occasion and come out better," said Jones.

"These players know what's expected of them, they have a fantastic opportunity to show they can compete against the best and if they can do that and they play to their capabilities then I can't expect anything more from them.

"If we play to our best and Arsenal come out on top then then no-one can complain. We will give it our best shot."

CA's probe into Symonds' latest gaffe

Cricket Australia will decide by the weekend what action to take against seemingly habitual offender Andrew Symonds.

Symonds had recently labelled Kiwi Test star Brendon McCullum a "lump of s***" in a radio interview.

CA Chief Executive Michael Brown would on Tuesday listen to audio of Symonds radio rant and decide if explanation should be sought from Symonds.

Symonds makes bizzare comment

"I've heard the interview. I've sent the audio file to Michael Brown. He will listen to the tape on Tuesday and determine if anything needs to be done," said CA General Manager of public affairs Peter Young.

"There's no need to rush it any faster than that. Michael will talk to James Sutherland and make a decision sometime this week on what, if anything, he needs to do next," he was quoted as saying by 'The Sunday Telegraph'.

CA boss James Sutherland will return from annual leave on Wednesday.

Symonds made the bizzare comments live on air on radio station network 'Triple M' while taking a swipe at NSW for signing McCullum at the expense of a local player for the KFC Big Bash Twenty20 final against Victoria.

"They're trying to use him (McCullum) as the out because he's a Kiwi. Yep, we love to hate them, but he's the lump of s..., sorry, lump of cow dirt, that people are thinking of," Symonds had told the show hosts.

Symonds can face stern action from CA

The paper claimed Symonds was out drinking at a pub prior to the six-minute radio interview, which he conducted from his home in the Gold Coast hinterland.

The all rounder could face stern action from CA, even scrapping of his USD 500,000-a-year contract, after his fourth off-field misdemeanour in five months.

Since last August, Symonds has been sent home from Darwin for missing a team meeting for 'gone fishing', slept through a Queensland training session just three weeks into his comeback and became embroiled in a brawl with a fan at a Brisbane pub.

Asked if Symonds faced termination of contract following his latest off-field saga, Young said, "I wouldn't want to comment on hypotheticals. The process is quite clear. You judge every issue or incident on its individual merits and you then make decisions according to the existing policies and processes that we have.

"We have a code of behaviour. Under the code, we have 10 days before we need to make a decision if necessary. Michael will listen to the tape and if it merits further discussion, that will occur at the start of next week," Young said.

In the radio interview, Symonds had also raised eyebrows when he made a comment about Matthew Hayden's wife Kellie.

Asked about Hayden's cooking, Symonds said he took a "side glance" at Hayden's wife as "it helps the meal go down amply well".

Hayden has, however, contacted Symonds and said he took "no offence to his close mate's joke".

Sehwag confident about facing Mendis

On the eve of the Indian team's departure for Sri Lanka, Virender Sehwag has sought to put the rivals on the backfoot.

Sehwag said he had done his homework against mystery spinner Ajantha Mendis and would not hesitate to attack him, adding that his knowledge of the nuances of the game made it easy for him to deal with mystery bowlers like Mendis.

"I am exceptionally aware of the nuances of the game. I know what's happening, who is where and how to take advantage of him in the field. I studied him (Mendis) during the Asia Cup in Pakistan. Even at non-striker's end, I kept following his methods. His style when he is bowling off-spin, googly, or pushing it through middle finger.

Sehwag: I'll not have problems against Mendis

"So I have no problem in attacking him. A bowler is demoralised if he knows that a batsman has read him completely", Sehwag said.

He said a bowler like Mendis preferred to keep three or four fielders close to bat. "It means there are open spaces in the field. Even a mis-hit can give you boundaries," he explained.

"Unlike the accepted norm, I find hitting against the spin more profitable. It allows one to free one's arms," he said.

The explosive right-hander, who claimed that he never looks back in regret, said his big knocks won't count anything for him if the team had not won ultimately.

"I never look back. I have never looked back on those innings. What is gone is gone, it's over," he asserted.

"Nothing more thrilling than winning"

Asked whether his two triple centuries in Tests mean anything special to him, Sehwag replied, "They don't. Surely not as much as winning a match for your team. All of us play to win. Nothing is more thrilling than winning a match for your team." Sehwag also recalled how an advice from former India captain Sunil Gavaskar helped him correct his stance.

"Once Sunil Gavaskar asked me look to take middle or off-stump guard. And I think it has suited me. With a leg-stump guard, you could be chasing a wide delivery. Or leaving a gap. With a middle-and-off stump guard, the bowler doesn't know where to pitch his stuff.

"If it is in stumps, you could whip it to onside. If it is outside the off-stump, he is allowing you to play your favourite shots. I always take middle stump guard," he said.

Sehwag also had a unique way of keeping focussed at the crease.

Sehwag hum songs

"I want my mind to be absolutely free while facing up to a bowler. I try to hum songs, bhajans, Sai Baba bhajans, Kishore Kumar songs, especially those pictured on Amitabh Bachchan, till the bowler is about to deliver," he said.

"I then tell myself: Watch It. I try to sing songs as perfectly as possible in order to keep my mind completely uncluttered," the 30-year-old batsman said.

On whether it would be tough to find a replacement for Anil Kumble, Sehwag said, "Kumble was in a league of his own. It's impossible to get a bowler like him." "In his absence, Harbhajan Singh is our frontline spinner. On foreign pitches, it would be three pacers and Harbhajan. So there would be added responsibility on him. He is now sufficiently experienced and one hopes he would rise to the occasion.

Federer battles back to win

Roger Federer came from two sets to love down to see off Tomas Berdych and reach the quarter-finals of the Australian Open.

Federer, who has won every one of their previous seven meetings since losing to Berdych at the 2004 Olympics, took three hours 29 minutes to get past the 20th seed and book a last-eight date with Juan Martin Del Potro.

At once stage Federer looked in serious danger of failing to reach the quarters at a grand slam for the first time since Roland Garros in 2004, but used all his experience to progress with a 4-6 6-7 (4/7) 6-4 6-4 6-2 win.

The world number two got off to a poor start, dropping his serve in the opening game.

He was broken again in the fifth when Berdych got back from 40-15 down to nail a cross-court forehand winner to take a 4-1 lead.

But Berdych immediately dropped his own service game before Federer held for 4-3.

The next two games went with serve leaving Berdych to serve out the set which he did.

The second set was much tighter but this time Federer got the early advantage, holding his serve to love then breaking his opponent in the next for a 2-0 lead.

But again Berdych rallied, breaking the Federer serve for the third time in the match and holding his own to level things 2-2.

The remainder of the set went with serve, forcing the tie-break.

Berdych jumped out to a 3-1 lead but errors on the following two points allowed the Swiss back in and another backhand into the net squared it up 4-4.

But Berdych made the breakthrough on the Federer serve and a simple volleyed winner on the next point put him two sets up.

Breaks of service littered the start of the third set but Federer made a vital breakthrough at 3-3 when Berdych, on serve, sent a backhand slice wide then smashed an easy volley into the net to give his opponent a 4-3 lead.

It was all the three-time Australian Open champion needed and at 5-4 up he served for the set, clinching it with an ace.

The start of the fourth set produced yet another break of serve, this time Federer getting the early advantage.

Berdych held his next service game comfortably and a couple of aces from Federer, who served well throughout the match, helped him to a 3-1 lead.

A superb drop-shot from Berdych helped him on his way to holding the fifth game before another ace and a cross-court winner kept Federer in front.

Berdych had a medical time out for work on his left hamstring then pushed Federer hard in the next game before a winner to the corner and an ace had the second seed 5-3 up.

Berdych held his serve again and had three break points in the next game but couldn't capitalise as Federer clinched the set at the second opportunity.

The world number two raced out to a 5-2 lead in the decider as Berdych started to falter.

Federer made a meal of serving for the match, wasting two match points, but he eventually sealed the win with two aces - his 19th and 20th of the match.

United debutants earn plaudits

Manchester United's three debutants made an impression during the team's 2-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur.

United have recently been plagued by injuries and manager Sir Alex Ferguson is more than willing to throw his youngsters into fray - namely Fabio, Richard Eckersley and Zoran Tosic.

The trio put in a top-drawer performance for their Old Trafford bow. For an experienced campaigner such as Paul Scholes, he is more than happy to see Ferguson blooding new faces into the side.

"They did really well," Paul Scholes told MUTV.

"Fabio did really well and it's unfortunate that he picked up an injury. But then Eckersley came on and did really well. He's been out for three months with a knee injury, so to come straight into a first-team game is really good, and Zoran came on towards the end, dug in and defended for us really well."

Fabio, in particular, caught the eye of Ferguson, who was pleased with his display at left-back. Despite the Brazilian limping off with a calf strain, Ferguson was clearly delighted with the progress with the Da Silva brothers since they arrived in England. Fabio's twin brother, Rafael, has made 18 appearances in the first-team.

"The da Silva brothers have got great temperament to play," Sir Alex said of the duo.

"They've got a winning mentality. Like Rafael, Fabio loves playing and loves training, the enthusiasm is always there."

Even young keeper Ben Foster had words of encouragement for Fabio's debut.

"Confidence is something that those twins definitely aren't lacking!" he said.

"Since they arrived they have been absolutely fantastic. Fabio has been a bit unlucky with injuries, but he's definitely one for the future."

Bryant edges into Mitsubishi lead

Brad Bryant clinched the lead at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship with a seven-under-par second-round of 65.

That helped him edge ahead of Bernhard Langer in Hualalai. The duo entered the day tied for the lead and Bryant almost matched his opening round with eight birdies and a bogey to head the field on 15-under.

Langer also carded eight birdies but dropped a shot on each nine to finish 14-under.

The two-time Masters champion and the Champion's Tour Player of the Year last season, Langer birdied four of his last six holes.

Jay Haas is in third in the season opener on 14-under after recording a six-under 66.

Former champion Hale Irwin and Jeff Sluman are three strokes off the lead at 12-under.

The 63-year-old Irwin, who won this tournament in both 1997 and 2007, and Sluman each signed for a 67.

Defending champion Fred Funk is not competing in the event as he is sidelined with a right knee injury which plagued him for much of the 2008 season.

Magical Murali reaches 500

Muttiah Muralitharan joined the elite club of 500 wickets when he snapped Pakistani tailender Sohail Khan.

This leaves Muralitharan just two wickets behind Wasim Akram who holds the record for most number of ODI wickets. Wasim Akram has 502 wickets in his kitty which he took in 356 matches whereas Murali has picked up 500 in 324 matches.

Muralitharan picked up his first wicket against India in 1993 at Colombo. His first victim was Praveen Amre.

His first 50 wickets took him 45 matches but since then all his chunks of 50 wickets have come in less than 40 games. The highest that he took since then was 37 matches to reach 200 from 150 wickets.

Murali has a phenomenal record against all teams but out of his tally of 500 wickets, the maximum have come against Pakistan. He has scalped 86 wickets against them in 59 matches at an average of 25.17.

Murali has more than 50 wickets against five Test playing nations that include Australia, India, New Zealand, Pakistan and Zimbabwe and out of these his best average is against the Zimbabweans (14.85).

The magical offie would now play his next ODI against the Indians in the upcoming ODI series and Indians have more to be bothered now since the hungry and wily bowler would be licking his lips at the prospect of becoming the highest wicket taker in the ODI's.

Reports: City target Diego

Having missed out on Kaka, Manchester City have set their sights on signing Werder Bremen midfielder Diego now.

City's failure to sign Kaka was a serious blow to Robinho.

And he has made his displeasure known by storming out of the club's training camp in Tenerife - returning to Brazil to be with his family instead.

Now, according to News Of The World, manager Mark Hughes is considering signing Diego in order to placate a disappointed Robinho. That however, would be a sheer test of his man-management skills.

Like Robinho, Diego has forged his own 'bad-boy' ways at Bremen, following a series of unsavoury incidents.

Here is what the 23-year-old midfielder did:

  • Strangled a Karlsruhe player during a Bundesliga match. Now currently serving a four-match ban for his actions.
  • Defied the orders of Werder Bremen officials and jetted off to China with Brazil to play in the Beijing Olympics.
  • Turns up late for training.
  • Stopped by police for an alleged drink-driving offence.
His defence over actions?

Diego said: "I had a couple of glasses of wine at dinner and was stopped by the police but I did not lose my licence as some reports claimed."

Hughes believes by signing Diego will ensure that Robinho is kept happy and will remain at Eastlands. After all, the duo came through the ranks together at Brazilian club Santos.

Diego has been linked with Real Madrid, Juventus and Arsenal in the January transfer window so far.

But should Hughes move for the creative playmaker, there is without doubt that the soap drama at Eastlands is set to play on, as the combustive nature of Robinho and Diego would surely test the City's manager patience and tolerance.
